This paper addresses three main key aspects of a portfolio for an organization - decision support, strategy and the intent of application diversification. It describes this with a Composite Features Diagramming impact Assessment (CFDiA) model, a visual decision making device. The authors have developed to help managers and employees both make sense of the complexities made visible through quantifying and qualitative assumptions and attributes.

The CFDiA model is derived from several years of action research into the use of capital and engineering organization knowledge, decision making, strategy, policy making and implementation. The model is explained, its conceptual groundwork is outlined bringing an old skill into a new context, and its use in visual decision making is described. Finally, the consequences of using CFDiA as mechanism are considered.
