Strategic Management Information Systems


Different tools can suit different types of organisations, and different levels of strategic planning. Some focus on what is a Strategic Management Information System (SMIS), while others more on what an SMIS can do to provide management with the required information.

For example: by examining two checklist style approaches to strategic analysis: SWOT and Sector. The checklist approaches represent a way of analysis that provides a checklist of elements that need to be included in any analysis or discussion, rather than a tool to aid in the actual choice/decision making process.

IS can help to categorise business opportunities, analyse a company's strategic importance, and the impact it may have on a company's operations and its ability to support decision making and use of assets. Moreover, the different techniques available to help a company ascertain its competitive position, both at industry level and organisational level.

IS strategy planning techniques that analyse or provide models of the internal workings of the organisation. The Evolutionary Models for IS systems that enable an organisation to look at the different stages an organisation may pass through, based on assumptions on how an organisation learns about IS and assuming a certain predictability of progression.

Benchmarking is about how basic functions and processes in the organisation's value chain are carried out in comparison to those in other organisations, in order to ascertain how well (or otherwise) the company performs in relation to its rivals.
