1. Generic IS Strategies
Gregory Parsons (1983) devised a classification set of IS strategies in order to provide a labelling system for each internal strategy type that an organisation might adopt:
- Centrally Planned
- Leading Edge
- Free Market
- Monopoly
- Scarce Resource
- Necessary Evil
2. Value Chain and Value System Analysis
In Porter's view (1985), all organisations have an internal value chain, as well as belonging to an overall industry value system, shown in Figure 13:

The central premise of an organisation Internal Value Chain model is a connected chain of processes that take place within the organisation and add value to it.
3. Information Intensity Matrix
This is another Porter and Millar tool (1985), which measures the information content (information intensity) of a product or service in order to ascertain the strategic importance of IS in relation to it. Where an organisation places its activities in the matrix will help identify whether information is an important commodity within the organisation and, by association, whether IS will therefore be. The higher the information intensity, the greater, potentially, is the strategic importance of IS. Figure 14 shows that a company that produces bricks and cement has a low product information content/low value chain information content, which suggests a low need for IS resources, and areas such as newspapers and education, where information is a key element to the business, and will therefore require high IS usage.

Information Intensity Matrix measures the information content (intensity) of a product/service, to ascertain the strategic importance of IS in relation to it.
